In the first of two finals scheduled for the Under 18 Girls away at the neutral Walton on Thames CC ground on 27th August, the GU18 T1 took on East Molesey in the final of the Surrey Hundred Cup.
Captain Anna Lewis won the toss and elected to field first, with Sophie Bellew opening the bowling. It looked like disaster had struck in the first over, when Esmae Vos’s shoe caught as she turned to chase the ball, and she fell, injuring her leg. However, after some stretching, Esmae shook off the pain and played on. Anna kept a lid on East Molesey in the second over, before Sophie took her first wicket lbw with ball 11.
After another extremely tidy over by Anna, Bella Barton bowled 10 balls straight, claiming the next victim with a catch by Sophie. Harriet Jones took the fifth and sixth sets, taking a wicket with her first ball (caught behind by WK Aashny Rajnikanth), and then teaming up with Anna for a runout on her fifth ball. Carrying straight on, the second set was a wicket maiden for Harriet. East Molesey 30-5 after 40 balls. Eleanor Clark then stepped up, teaming up with Charlotte Pitt for a runout on her fourth ball and taking a clean bowled wicket on her fifth; Eleanor also carried on to deliver a wicket maiden with the second set! Left-handed off-spinner Amelia Leonard took the next set, and proved our spinners are as effective as our pace bowlers, taking the final two wickets in five balls to leave East Molesey all out for 33.
A quick sugar hit later, Naomi Saunders (who had been suffering with a headache before the match but soldiered on) and Aashny took to the field. Knowing they had all the time they could ever need, they played themselves in steadily with 9 runs off the first 10 balls, before turning up the pressure with 18 off the second 10 balls.
Perfectly judged running took us to 32, before Naomi hit a huge four down past fine leg to see us easily across the line. Reigate Priory 26-0, GU18 Hundred Cup Champions by 10 wickets. (Eleanor 2-1, Harriet 2-2, Amelia 2-2, Bella 1-6, Sophie 1-13. Naomi 17* from 16 balls, Aashny 16* from 9 balls.)
